Car manufacturing firm Honda has revealed that it is to ramp up output at its Swindon plant, investing £267 million to increase yearly vehicle output from its current 183,000 to around 250,000. Over the next three years new cars and engines will be produced at the site, with around 500 extra jobs being created in the process.
For those living in and around Swindon and looking for employment, Honda’s latest announcement is very good news. The large investment has added to expert belief that Honda’s new CR-V and Civic cars will be built in Swindon, alongside a new 1.6-litre diesel engine. This will require hundreds of new staff to be employed, with local recruitment agencies able to take advantage of the opportunity to help place workers.
Talking of the latest news, Vince Cable, business secretary, said that the expansion could not have come at a better time. “The investment supports the government’s ambition to encourage new investment and exports as a route to renewed growth and a more balanced economy,” he explained.
Britain’s automotive industry continues to do well, despite recent reports that overall manufacturing numbers are troubled. During July the SMMT noted a 22.2% rise in car manufacturing when compared with June, whilst there was a 15.1% rise on figures for the previous year. With many people remaining out of work, the latest employment opportunity could offer a lifeline for a lot of individuals keen to get back to work.
